  • Dr. McKenzie's interest in naturopathic medicine, midwifery and spirit medicine was kindled while working as a horse pack wilderness ranger in the southern Rocky Mountains of New Mexico more than 30 years ago. It was in those sacred mountains that she was introduced to her first medicinal plant, osha root (Ligusticum porteri), a plant that grows above 7500’ elevation and is used for it’s potent anti-viral properties. From that meeting forward, while working as a ranger, she always carried a nub of osha root in her horse’s saddlebags when she was on trail for extended periods of time. It was from there that she stepped onto the path of inquiry into the transformative healing power of nature, botanical medicine, therapeutic nutrition, homeopathy, midwifery, cupping and other manual therapies. Keyena received her doctoral degree in naturopathic medicine, certification in naturopathic midwifery and completed an extended course of homeopathic studies with renowned practitioners from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 1998 and is currently registered with the state of MN as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND); licensed by the state of Oregon as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND), the state of Wisconsin as a Licensed Midwife (LM) and the North American Registry of Midwives as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). She is a professional member of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS). She completed the lactation educator training program through the Evergreen Family Medical Center in Washington state and is a certified HART Method/Maya abdominal therapy practitioner and incorporates cupping, gua sha and moxibustion therapies into her treatments as indicated. She has completed extended studies in the specialties of naturopathic oncology, bioregulatory medicine and the treatment of Lyme, tick-borne diseases and co-infections. Her approach to healing uncovers imbalance layer-by-layer to effectively identify and remove the underlying causes of dis-ease wherever possible. She does not compartmentalize nor treat imbalance in isolation. Optimal healing requires attention to the entire being. She sees healing as a joint venture and especially enjoys working with those who are not only ready for change but also prepared to do the work needed for improved well-being.
